DOWN STAIRS GALLERY

PROJECTS

Down Stairs

In 2013 with Dmitri Galitzine I established Down Stairs with the aim of offering a diverse visual arts experience, working with artists from a variety of backgrounds, across all media. Exhibiting in 5000 sq ft of gallery space as well as the grounds of the house in which the gallery was located, we supported artists at the early stages of their career, showing emerging artists shoulder to shoulder with established names. My responsibilities stretched from top to bottom, both devising the programme, curating & installing exhibitions. Alongside the gallery programme of Down Stairs I initiated, managed and delivered a residency scheme at Great Brampton House, giving artists the opportunity to retreat to an purpose built isolated cabin, and work from a studio & workshop complex we developed from an old stable block. I gave residents first hand support and technical assistance in delivering their works across a varied scope of disciplines.

In 2013 Down Stairs was listed in the Hot 100 artist-led initiatives published in A-N that aimed to draw attention to some of the most superb activity being facilitated by emerging independent artists and curators in the UK.

Artists exhibited to date include Alice Anderson, William Cobbing, Katie Cuddon, Jeremy Deller, Sean Dower, Benedict Drew, Cathy Lomax, Heather Phillipson, Nicholas Pope, Jimmy Merris, Mark McGowan, Simon Roberts, Mark Titchner, Susan Stockwell, Gavin Turk, Sarah Woodfine, Hennessy Youngman and Lucy Woodhouse amoungst many others.
